Rota is the perfect destination for golf-lovers due to the many great courses in the surrounding area, in addition to the sunny weather, beautiful beaches and delicious food.
The Rota area offers a wide variety of links, from the ones made for the enjoyment of every player to those which hosted tour events.
If you are a golfer, here are four must-play courses near Rota.
Costa Ballena Ocean Golf Club
Designed and Inaugurated in 1997 by Spanish golf legend José María Olazabal, Costa Ballena has the best practice area in Europe, according to the PGA of Sweden. The course has 36 holes, of which 27 are competition holes and 9 are par 3s. It was a European Tour “Q-School” venue from 2005 to 2011.
Because of the location next to the beach, you will hear the crashing waves while playing and see the ocean while practicing on the massive driving range or while teeing off in the 12th tee box.
Costa Ballena is the closest course to Rota, at less than 15 minutes from the city center.
Sherry Golf Jerez
One of the longest courses in Spain, at 6572 meters / 7187 yards from the back tees, Sherry Golf was designed by Stirling & Martin Golf Architects. The mostly-flat course with wide fairways and greens makes Sherry Golf Jerez a nice venue for everybody.
The course hosts the King´s Trophy of Spain, one of the biggest tournaments in amateur golf. Players like Sergio Garcia competed here before becoming professional golfers.
Sherry Golf is located in Jerez, home of many horse shows and famous bodegas. It’s less than half an hour from the center of Rota.
Barceló Montecastillo Golf
One of the best players in history, Jack Nicklaus, was the designer of this course. With a length of 6456 meters / 7060 yards and a par 72, Montecastillo is one of the most challenging courses in this area.
The best Spanish golf players in history, including Severiano Ballesteros, Miguel Ángel Jiménez and José María Olazábal, played Montecastillo when the Volvo Masters European Tour event was celebrated in 1997 and 2001.
This course is also in Jerez and approximately 35 minutes from Rota.
Villanueva Golf & Croquet
Villanueva was inaugurated in 2006 by Aymerich Consulting, and after closing in December 2014, it was reopened in November 2015. It is a par 72 with 6141 meters/ 6716 yards, easy to walk and accessible for every type of player.
Many of the tournaments organized from this club are open to the public and usually include great prizes and giveaways.
Villanueva is in the city of Puerto Real and less than 15 minutes from Cadiz, capital city of the Province of Cadiz. It’s just over 30 minutes from Rota.
